I've been looking for free solutions for virus scanning, and I think I might finally have found one. If you are looking for an alternative free virus scanner, you should really read this one... You may also skip to the end and visit the websites!

I've been researching several software packages, including Zimbra ( a mail + calendar + dms system ). Zimbra is integrated with an open source virus scanning engine called ClamAv. This is what got me to look for free certified virus scanners using this engine. This is not yet the virus scanner!

This engine is rather powerful, free and open source. This means it has been developed by a vast community of programmers, and everyone is allowed to provide suggestions and ideas. It is the leading software package for dynamically scanning incoming and outgoing email messages for viruses. It is extremely fast according to all reviews.

This same engine has also been built into a full-feature, free, virus scanner for Windows systems. This product is called Immunet, an open-source solution for protection you against viruses. It includes real-time scanning, so each file will automatically be scanned without you actually noticing much.

It also allows for scheduled scanning, clever scheduled scanning and more. I've been looking for alternatives to NOD32 for quite some while now, NOD32 was my favourite virus scanner up to now, however Immunet sounds rather promising. It might just replace NOD32 on my systems.

The virus definitions include all known threats like Worms and Trojans, and are updated daily to include new threats as well. You can even code your own signature detection into the virus scanner. That's some rather advanced stuff though, but it is an extra feature.

In my opinion, it's a great solution for virus protection on your systems. It has been verified by VeriSign. Checked by Westcoast Labs. Certified by BBB.
