The Lua scripting language Lua Development

I'm writing this blog, not only because of the competition to win a signed copy of the third edition of PiL [1], but to express what Lua has done for me in my professional life. In this blog I will write about how I use Lua on a day to day basis, and why Lua has been a great scripting language for me since I've known it.

I've started programming and scripting quite a few years ago, I was a youngster with the obsession to make computers do things I wanted them to do. It didn't take long for me to discover Lua and a community implementing it in an engine allowing developers to quickly create software for Windows [2].

At first, Lua was a great language for me to start learning the tricks in the incredible vast world of software development and automation of certain tasks. I started writing my own applications in Lua using AMS [2], and I even developed software for friends, family and communities to m..

Subsonic Media Streamer Software

Subsonic, the free and opensource music and video streaming software you can use to access your media from any location with internet. For a small donation, you even enable music and video streaming on mobile devices. Access your media from a web browser, a media player or simply code an application using the API!

Yesterday my Spotify Premium trial ended, while I got used to playing all the music I wanted to play on my Samsung Galaxy Tab. This brought me to the point where I really wanted to find a software solution I could use to mimic the Spotify set-up. Considering I already have a lot of music stored in my network, I thought about a streaming server with required logins.

I started Googling at around 7:30 AM, finding many software packages allowing for media servers, streaming servers and other solutions I could use to start streaming my media to external locations. All of these solutions were either expensive or very limited in functionality, ..

Object oriented programming in Lua Lua Development

This post is related to the scripting language Lua, and object oriented programming (scripting).
This method of programming is often referred to L-OOP in the communities in which I share my work, and it is
a very powerful addition to regular scripting in Lua.

Lua is a very powerful scripting language, extremely fast and very dynamic and expandable. Even though regular usage of Lua already is very powerful, when you get to know the L-OOP ways of scripting, you'll be able to achieve much more and you can keep the implementation of your code to a minimum. It also allows you to create custom objects with custom methods and custom implementations of the Lua operators.

Basic constructor
A constructor in an OOP system constructs the object you can later work with. These functions usually initialize the object with data you provide to it, or simply make an empty object methods and functio..

The person who motivated VFAD! Motivational

This is about the person who motivated me to make Valentine for a Day. I was talking to her today, and I was asking her what kind of blog I should write, because I'm actually rather without inspiration regarding blogs lately. She said I should write one about her. I thought, fine, why not! Let's go!

Her name is Rea, and she's 20 years of age when I wrote this blog. I've met her on the net actually, and I've known her for quite a few years through those means since then. We exchanged message through social networks, text messages through that nifty technology we call cellphones, chat messages through MSN and even after all that, we have only met in person once.

And even though our contact has been like this for years, and even though we have only met once, we always seem to keep in touch! We talk about daily matters, general news and stu..

The idea behind my abstract graphical work called Valentine for a Day. This is yet another blog in which I explain why I created the image displayed below, and what I was thinking at that time.

The idea behind this one isn't that complicated at all actually. The title is the reason why I made this image, for a good friend. I made another one for her, but I was so eager to show her that image, I showed it to her two weeks before valentines day...

Originally I made this image to try to comfort her a bit. She had a tough period back then, and wasn't feeling all to happy. This isn't the casual crybaby situation we see a lot on stuff ..

The first of a series, in this blog I will try to explain the idea behind Chaotic Perspective. This is an abstract graphical design which I made in Photoshop. This image reflects on my way of thinking, but also on my way of seeing things.

In this series, I'm going to attempt to explain the thoughts and ideas behind several of my abstract graphical works. Many people ask me what I was thinking when I made them, or why I even came up with the idea.

I came up with this one when I was a little bored on a Saturday night. I was trying to think about things to do, when my mind drifted away and thousands of ideas passed through it. I was trying to fetch a single idea from this big mess, and I wanted to see if I could do that at the mo..

Immunet - Free anti-virus solution. Software

I've been looking for free solutions for virus scanning, and I think I might finally have found one. If you are looking for an alternative free virus scanner, you should really read this one... You may also skip to the end and visit the websites!

I've been researching several software packages, including Zimbra ( a mail + calendar + dms system ). Zimbra is integrated with an open source virus scanning engine called ClamAv. This is what got me to look for free certified virus scanners using this engine. This is not yet the virus scanner!

This engine is rather powerful, free and open source. This means it has been developed by a vast community of programmers, and everyone is allowed to provide suggestions and ideas. It is the leading software package for dynamically scanning incoming and outgoing email messages for viruses. It is extremely fast according to all reviews.

This same engine has also been built into a full-feature, free,..

Complaints! Rants

This one is going to be about people who complain a lot. I'm not talking about a regular rant or just something that's really bothering you. I'm not talking about something that is actually worth complaining about.

I'm talking about completely wasting all your energy on complaining about something so small, it could be insignificant.

I mean, for the sake of it, pay some close attention to what people post on social networking sites. It's 90% about all the shitty things they experience in their day, some people even only post when there's something to bitch about.
And then, when they post all this bitcherydoo, it's always about the tiniest things in life that, well, actually don't suck that much anyhow!

I know that, what I'm doing right now, could be classified as bitching. Sure, it's even categorized as a rant, however I'm not doing this every single moment of every day. Besides, I'm bitching about people who are bitching abo..

It has been something I was quite interested in for a long time. Capturing a specific moment and make it look as good as possible, isn't that just perfect? Playing with colours, views, perspectives, light, scenery and everything you actually see.

I used to love it, I love it now and I'll probably love it in the future.

I used to make pictures all the time, with a simply small camera using a super-macro feature. I liked capturing small things in detail, showing how much even smaller things were to be found on that tiny object. I didn't only do it to be able to show these things though, I wanted to see them for myself.

Even though this was really fun to do, after a while with a compact camera, things get boring. I sometimes used the Olympus camera my, back then, girlfriend used to have. I found out that a bigger camera with nice lenses and adjustable shutter speed etc. was way more capable of capturing good views!

It's no..

Using the bad, for the good. Motivational

I dedicate this blog to one of my friends, who has had many moments in her life in which she felt like control and rationality seemed to slip away.

It's about negative events in life, and handling them. It is a fact that everyone in life has his or her own way of processing certain impacting events in their life. Some more effective than others, some more destructive than others.

Now, I won't have to tell you which ones are destructive or not. People who use these methods of handling these negative events in life, even know for their selves, that these methods do more harm than good.

However, using destructive ways of handling these emotions and events, is wasting energy in my opinion. I think you can use all of these experiences and turn them around into positive aspects of life. Yes, every single one of them.

I'm not an optimist, nor a pessimist. I am a realist, that's why I seek balance in between optimism and pessi..
